Nursery Buddies

Today we did something a little different with our Nursery Buddies. We took them out to the garden and read to them. Then, we all sat in the storytelling circle and listened as some volunteers read aloud to our Nursery friends. We have lots of fun things planned with our Nursery friends over the next few weeks. I can’t wait! I love seeing how responsible everyone is!

Weekly Update

WOW! What a busy and hard working week we have had. I have been SO impressed with everyone’s behaviour this week and how focused everyone has been on their learning. This makes me very happy! Here is a little round-up of what we have been doing:

Numeracy: In Numeracy this week, we moved on to have a look at number patterns and sequences. I have been very impressed with how well everyone has coped with this so far. We mainly looked at identifying the rule that a sequence follows and how to continue the pattern. Next week, we will move on to look at multiples and some of us will be learning about square numbers. With Miss Shaw, you started looking at volume and how to convert between milliltres and litres. Miss Shaw will be concentrating on volume for a couple of weeks and then moving on to time.

Literacy: Our focus in our literacy workshop this week has been on contractions. This is when a word is shortened and an apostrophe takes the place of a missing letter or letters. For example, what’s = what is. We will be moving on next week to have a look at possessive apostrophes and how to use them. In writing, we have been looking at how to write a biography. We started by identifying the features of a biography and then moved on to plan our own. We took a class vote and the first person that we wanted to learn and write about was Taylor Swift. Next, we will look at Ronaldo. In a couple of weeks, you will have the chance to pick your own famous person and do some research about them so that you can write your biography in class.

IDL: I hope that you enjoyed our Assembly on Tuesday. I am extremely proud of how well everybody did. Next week, we are moving away from Racism and going to take a look at a Science-based topic. I won’t ruin the surprise yet though…

Health and Wellbeing: This week, we took a close look at friendships and the characteristic that makes a good friend. We thought about what characteristics are very important, pretty important or desirable but not so important. We then created a WANTED poster for a good friend – what good fun this was!

Onto this week….

  • You will now be doing PE with me on a Monday as well as with Mr Scott-Woodhouse on a Thursday. PLease make sure you have your kit on both days.
  • Thursday is World Book Day and you should come to school dressed as your favourite book character or in your PJ’s. Don’t forgot to bring your favourite book. Any parents that would like to come in and read or do some reading-related activities then please let me know!
  • Please remember to bring your reading book in every day. There are still people who forget it on a regular basis.
  • P6’s will be visiting the Nursery more often to spend some quality time with their buddy. There has been a few changes made and I will speak to those people affected on Monday.
  • The Big Pedal starts on Monday for 3 weeks. Some great prizes can be won so get cycling or scooting to school for the next 3 weeks. Remember that if your parents, siblings or friends are cycling to school or work then they can also be counted.
  • Any menu or Mother Day competition entry forms will be posted on Monday so please bring in your entries then. Remember your £1 for the Mothers Day competition.

Here’s to another hard working week!

We need YOU!!!!

At the moment we have been unable to get enough volunteers and it looks like this years P6 will be unable to take part in the Bikeability Course.

For our Primary 6 children to complete the Bikeability Course we are reliant on parent volunteers. If any parent is interested in supporting the Primary 6 programme and taking part in this training opportunity, please contact the school:

The Road Safety Unit plans to run free sessions on one of the following dates: 31 Mar 15, 1 Apr 15 & 22 Apr 15. Training sessions take 5 hours (9:30 – 14:30) and venues will be decided subject to school demand.

New volunteers must attend a Cycle Training Assistant (CTA) Course before delivering Bikeability to school pupils – the course is designed for school staff, parents or other community volunteers who are interested in delivering Bikeability Levels 1 & 2 to school pupil P5-7. Volunteers attending the course will be guided through the skills and competencies required to deliver bike safety training to the national standard of Bikeability. Please note that existing volunteers who have been delivering Cycling Proficiency or who have already achieved the CTA qualification are not required to retrain and should continue to deliver Bikeability at your school. There is a large practical element to the course and new volunteers should be reasonably confident cyclists, provide their own bike, helmet and safety clothing.

Rosa Parks changes the rules!

Today, in the Learning Zone, we had fun re-enacting the bus incident that made Rosa Parks famous. Before we could do this, we had to learn about the layout of the bus and what the rules were for black and white bus riders. Have a look at the attached sheet if you would like to see what we did.

Rosa Parks changed the rules

This drama provided us with the inspiration and learning that we will need to write a newspaper article about the incident tomorrow. We will be pretending that we are journalists reporting on the incident the day after it happened. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Mothers Day Competition

happy-mothers-day-1

“I am writing to you in the hope that pupil’s at Crown Primary School are up for a drawing challenge we are organising to celebrate Mother’s day in Eastgate Shopping Centre to support the local Archie Appeal raising money for a new children’s ward at Raigmore Hospital.

For this, we are looking for primary school children to take part in our Draw Your Mum for Mother’s Day competition which we hope will be a fun and creative activity for children to take part in and link with their art classes.

It’s very easy to take part; we will send out competition entry forms direct to your school, as well as an Archie donation tin for a proposed donation of £1 per entry.

Children can draw a portrait of their mother, grandmother, or special person in their life as part of the competition and can use whatever materials they like – felt tips, paint, crayons, collage or paint. All completed entry forms will then be displayed in a pop-up gallery in the Centre from Friday 6th March- Sunday 15th March.

There are three age categories for the competition, 4- 6 years, 7- 9 years and the 10- 12 years and one winner will be selected from each category. The winner’s portrait from each age category will receive a fantastic Mother’s Day prize for their mum and a £30 Eastgate Gift Voucher for themselves.

We would love to have Crown Primary School on board for this competition helping a very worthwhile local children’s charity and we’re sure the pupil’s will have a lot of fun taking part too.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN TAKING PART, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
